Neddy Flat Tyres and Hezekiah:
NEDDY FLAT TYRES
Arrived on 24th September 1996 through friends at Ballinamore, Neddy came from Altbrean, Swanlinbar, Co.Cavan.
Paid £35 IR from owner who wanted him to come in to the Sanctuary as his wife had just died from cancer and he was crippled with rheumatoid arthritis. He believed it was bad form to give him away and give his “luck” with him!
Neddy had been a working donkey and now had long, unattended feet. He was very suspicious of humankind generally, though he is now extremely affectionate.
He's a grey gelding, small, cow hocked, 'noble' nose and distinct “cross” marking. Loves to use everyone as a rubbing post.
A great character. Easy to recognise with his 'ten to three' ears. (see right)
Passed away suddenly after a period of illness, April 2010. Very loved and missed.
HEZEKIAH
16th FEBRUARY 2000. A handsome, tall black gelding of 30-35 years brought in from a bog in Roscommon where he was found tethered and apparently abandoned.
Very thin with rain scald and ringworm. His hooves had been extremely long but had been mutilated by a Roscommon “vet” prior to being brought to the sanctuary and he arrived in great pain. His hooves were sore with a tendency to bleed and it took many weeks to improve enough for him to walk comfortably. He has a kind, affectionate nature in spite of all. Difficult to keep weight on, especially in winter.
5th October 2011. Hezzy chose his own time to leave us. He passed away during the night in the haybarn where he had spent his last few days. He had been a constant companion to several other elderly donkeys, especially Aggie who was almost blind. Hezzy acted as her 'eyes' and shepherded her around the fields. Lately, his own eyesight had become poor and he had heart problems.
A lovely old donkey who will be much missed.
