Poems:
There are some of the poems that have been sent to us. Some are well known but others have been specially written for us.
Hezekiah
I know it's a bit of a mouthful,
But, Hezekiah is really my name.
You can come and give me a cuddle,
In fact you will find I'm quite tame.
I was feeling quite old when they found me,
Standing alone in that bog.
I do not know why, but they had left me to die.
Tied up to a rotten old log.
They brought me to live with the others,
Up here on the side of this hill,
But it took me a long time to settle.
For you see I was really quite ill.
But day by slow day I recovered.
Until I became really strong.
Now I love to get fussed by the people,
Although many do get my name wrong,
But that's enough of this lesson,
So before I go off to me hut.
Please take your hand from your pocket,
And sneak me one more Ginger Nut.
The name its quite royal,
King Hezekiah, you see.
Its dates back to the time Before Cookies,
BC seven hundred and three.
Neddy O'Shea
Neddy O'Shea
Was standing one day,
For he had nothing better to do.
He had chewed all the clover,
Several times over,
And was now admiring the view.
When from behind came a racket,
And the sound of a packet,
Being opened by a person he knew.
From the sweet spicy smell,
He could instantly tell,
It was something his old teeth could chew.
So, old Neddy O'Shea,
With a wallow and sway,
Trotted slowly towards the old gate,
Where the lady, so sweet,
Offering cookies to eat,
With a smile, would patiently wait.
Oh, that first Ginger Nut,
Slipped right down into his gut,
And old Neddy let out a hee-haw.
For the cookies were good,
And he hoped that he would,
Be offered at least several more.
But old Neddy O'Shea,
Didn't get his own way,
For the others, who lived in the pen.
All came a rushing,
Pushing and crushing,
To get to the biscuits again.
Now the lady she knew,
Just what to do,
And each donkey was offered just one.
While old Ned he stood still
On the side of the hill,
Until all of the biscuits were gone.
Old Neddy O'Shea,
Did not sulk away,
He just stood there looking all sad.
For he was quite smart,
And he knew in his heart,
It would not be the last one he had.
The lady strolled towards him,
And old Neddy did grin,
Yes, something had caught his old eye.
For there in her hand,
Was a carrot so grand.
It almost made old Neddy cry.
Now, Neddy O'Shea,
Spent the rest of that day,
Enjoying the carrot for lunch,
And all of the flavour,
Old Ned he did savour.
But where is the rest of the bunch?
So if you want a quick thrill,
Then go up that hill
To where all the donkeys do dwell,
But don't think them rude,
For begging for food,
It's one thing that the donkeys excel.
A Humble Little Ass
I saw him on a limestone road,
He was enjoying a dustbath
And his eyes were all aglow.
The scene was so entrancing
I simply could not pass
So I watched in fascination
The humble little ass.
His hair hung long and matted,
I suppose that no one cared
His hooves were long and misshapen
And should have been well pared,
For him no heated stable,
Or succulent bran mash
Just a nibble by the roadside
For the humble little ass
There I saw the great Saint Francis
Who God's praises all did sing
And his hymns today so sweet and gay,
Around the world do ring.
He chastised his worn body
So that to perfection it might pass
Then jokingly he christened it,
His little brother ass.
I watched him very slowly rise
And then all clear and stark,
I saw outlined, proportioned there,
The cross upon his back.
Oh: how I prayed as there I stayed
And he on his way did pass
Oh: God grant to me, that I may be
As privileged as the ass.
From Flynn
This is something for my dear friend to think of now and then.
I did not want my stay with you to end the way it did,
But we both knew what you had to do, so hard to decide when.
I know you understood that the time had finally come.
I let you know and I knew you would.
That time was when our friendship shone.
Now I'm free of pain, happy and content.
And, until we walk together again, keep me close.
My love to you is sent and with you always I'll remain.
When you rest your hands on a weary head,
I'll be there to say, "You're safe now with my friend."
We'll take away the fear and dread.
We'll work 'till their hearts will mend.
You will go on loving and caring with me to help you see,
For I am the finest example of true love that ever could be.
So remember I am beside you every step of the way
Through days that bring sunshine or rain.
And please, always remember,
There will be a day when we will walk together again.
Donkey of Brown
Donkey of brown please let me know
Why is it that you go so slow?
He turned round gently and to me said
I have some sense in my little brown head.
By hurrying so as you go by
You miss the beauty in earth and sky.
So I took his advice and looked around,
And I saw diamonds in dew drops on the ground.
Daises that dance in the sun's golden ray,
Things I missed as I hurried each day.
Gold in the buttercups, clouds in the blue,
What the donkey had said was perfectly true.
Sanctuary
The Donkey Sanctuary takes in the unwanted,
Big eyes, crooked feet, unhealthy donkeys,
Yet beauty inexplicable draws the eyes.
Even broken and bleeding they show beauty,
Caring people prove the badness a minority.
People a multitude of ages prove the bright nature,
On a cold rainy night these lucky animals,
Shelter in dry clean homes no more to be forgotten, forlorn.
A rest home for donkeys and ponies
