Billy Magpie and Penny Biscuit:
BILLY MAGPIE
Bought by the relatives of a Sanctuary follower for her 60th birthday on 16th July 2005 as a rescue from Drumshanbo Horse Mart and relinquished to the Sanctuary.
A generally depressed, 30 inch, miniature Shetland stallion gelded on 30th August, 2005. He had worm belly which was treated on arrival. He also had a tatty main and tail, and he was underweight but his hooves were in good condition.
He soon put on condition and now we have to keep his weight down! He is quiet and affectionate, except when his hooves are handled; when he becomes a demon.
Persistent and patient handling, especially from the farrier, has paid off and he is now easier to handle. He is usually grazed with Bobby and Cobby.
PENNY BISCUIT
A delightful 18 year old piebald Shetland pony mare with chronic laminitis. Relinquished in 2002 by relatives when her owner died. She is an absolute charmer!
Her front legs are very arthritic – fetlocks overshot and now walks on the front of her near fore fetlock which is permanently locked.
Penny lives with the older donkeys in the winter and enjoys the company of other small ponies in the summer when there is sufficient grass for them all to live out together. She has a fantastic nature.
July 24th 2011 " We already know when one of our loved ones leave, others decide it is time for them too and this time it is Penny Biscuit who has decided she really has had enough. She is just so tired and no longer wants to make the effort even to move around the haybarn. This is an especially tough one, except I am certain in my heart that she is now in pain beyond the point where it is manageable for her. She will be helped on her journey tomorrow - and I suspect dear little Florrie will not be long following."
