Taus and Nancy:
TAUS
Arrived in April 2002. A thoroughbred chestnut mare 15hh. Confiscated by Sgt Arthur Doyle of Riverstown and attended by vet Peter Bowen Walsh of Collooney. In very poor condition; undernourished, lice infested, lame on near fore leg and with a growth on her off side brisket.
Mark Carter, farrier, attended on 22nd April 2002 and reported that she needs remedial shoeing to hold the feet together as they were so poor, but there was insufficient wall to the hoof to drive in a nail.Vet, Evi Stadler, attended on 25th April to look at the growth.
Taus improved over Summer 2002 and her hooves were beginning to come into shape, after several more trimmings, by that September. Fed feed supplement, Farrier’s Formula. Kept with Nancy, courtesy of the Henry family of Templevanny and Skreen. Now around 15 years old.
NANCY
Magnificent dark bay TB x mare of around 20 years old.
She birthed twin colt foals many years ago, both of whom survived and still belong to Nancy’s owners, the Henry family of Templevanny and Skreen.
Although Nancy could not breed again afterwards the Henry family did not want to sell her and she lived out near the Sanctuary. When Taus arrived, they agreed for the two mares to be kept together and the Sanctuary now looks after Nancy in return for the grazing of Taus.
January 2008 - Nancy was found badly hurt and, due to the nature of her injuries, had to be euthanased. A difficult decision to make under very trying circumstances. Much loved and missed. Another image of Nancy can be seen here.
