Misty, Peggy and Charlie Girl:
MISTY
September 1992. A grey mare, very thin and on very poor grazing. Bought for £20 IR delivered, from near Riverstown, Co. Sligo. She is shy and sweet, introverted and very pretty.
She put on weight rapidly all through the winter until we were convinced she was in foal. Vet, Sabine Conboy, checked her: no foal. Never looses the weight but does not get bigger either.
She is difficult to handle, hates being groomed and is fearful of men. Aged around 10 years when brought in. Fostered 2nd Sept. 1998. Very happy with two other donkey mares, Sally and Peggy.
PEGGY (no picture)
A small very dark brown, black nosed, mare relinquished by her owners when they returned to the UK in March 1999. Around 20 years old. Independent but affectionate. Bought from Ballinamore in poor condition. Placed in foster home with Misty and Sally in Co. Leitrim where she is very settled and is happy.
CHARLIE GIRL
Arrived 8th April, 2003 via Sligo SPCA. Found hobbled and tethered in a field by the N17 near Castlebar. A small grey mare in poor body condition, lice infested and with sawn off hooves. She was unable to move as she had wrapped herself around the stake and ‘sat down’. (Click the image to the right for a close-up of her hooves))
Lame and absolutely terrified. The Gardai confiscated her and awarded her into our care. I took many weeks to gain her confidence before even her hooves could be properly trimmed. She was placed in a foster home on 22nd August 2005 as a companion donkey and has since grown enormously.
